Cruise ship nears cyclone after brawl between bucks parties

The same cruise ship which was forced back to shore after a massive brawl broke out between two bucks parties has hit trouble again after heading towards the eye of a rapidly intensifying cyclone.

Crew members on the P&O cruise ship Pacific Explorer were left scrambling after they were caught off guard by Cyclone Hola in the South Pacific on Thursday, news.com.au reported.

Troubled waters from the ‘severe’ tropical cyclone meant the cruise ship was re-routed at the last minute to Nouméa, New Caledonia, instead of docking in the Isle of Pines.

A total of six men and one woman were kicked off the cruise after the brawl reportedly erupted last month over a queue for the toilet.

The 37-year-old woman – who is a Russian national – was later charged for allegedly smashing an empty wine bottle over the head of one of the men.

Witnesses said the boozy brawl, involving the woman’s husband, broke out in front of a bar called the Blue Room in front of 100 people.

‘It was just a very good buck’s party,’ one of the men later told 7 News.

Cyclone Hola caught meteorologists off-guard overnight as it rapidly intensified into a category four cyclone and formed a ‘pinhole eye’.

The tropical storm is expected to pass through Vanuatu and New Caledonia over the next 24 hours before heading straight towards Auckland.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department told the publication that seas in the South Pacific will remain rough with ‘heavy to phenomenal swells’.

Now residents in Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand have been told to monitor the storm as it threatens to leave a path of destruction.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruises said: ‘Our marine operations people have been tracking the development of this weather system for several days.

‘As a general principle our ships sail away from severe weather systems and this one is no exception.

‘Pacific Explorer is alongside at Noumea today instead of making a scheduled call to Isle of Pines. We will continue to monitor conditions and respond accordingly on the basis that safety is, as always, the first priority.’
