Customer catches moment Just Eat delivery driver ‘nicks chips from his takeaway’

A customer has claimed that a delivery driver scoffed some of his chips before handing over his takeaway order – and he has the footage to prove it. 

Wayne Fry, 42, watched on his Ring doorbell as the Just Eat driver arrived at his house in Weymouth, Dorset.

Video footage appears to show the delivery driver reaching into the bag and picking something up – and then moving his hand to his mouth. Mr Fry says he is convinced a few of his chips were taken. 

‘I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. He pulled up and picked up the bag of food from the passenger seat and started eating,’ Mr Fry said. 

‘He definitely had a couple of handfuls. When we unpacked the food the other paper bags were twisted together neatly at the top – but the chip bag was just crumpled.

‘I’m sure he shook it so it looked like there were more chips left inside than there actually were.’

Mr Fry, his wife and three kids ordered chips, curries and chicken balls via the Just Eat app on July 14 at around 6:45pm.

The family ate the rest of the food but couldn’t bring themselves to have the chips after seeing the clip.

After complaining to the popular online takeaway company, Just Eat offered a full refund and the takeaway restaurant offered him free food. 

The 42-year-old has now said he will never order from the restaurant again. 

‘You just don’t expect to see that when you’re buying the family a treat – we honestly thought we were seeing things,’ he told. 

‘It also makes you wonder what else goes on and how many other people this has happened to.

‘If he needed a couple of quid for some chips I’d have gladly given it to him. But I don’t know where his hands have been – I don’t want them in our food!’

Both Just Eat and the takeaway restaurant did not comment.

Earlier this year, Just Eat announced plans to axe around 1,700 delivery driver jobs – the vast majority of them understood to be in the UK – after a slowdown in takeaway demand following the end of the Covid lockdown.

The Anglo-Dutch firm said the cuts are part of an overhaul designed to improve efficiency as its seeks to reduce costs.

It comes after the takeaway firm has launched big budget ads with stars such as Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry, both with catchy songs that were a hit on social media.
