Cyclist dies outside Catford station after crash with lorry as driver is arrested for causing death by careless driving

A cyclist has died after a crash with a lorry outside a train station in London today.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision outside Catford station in South East London shortly after 6.30am this morning.

The driver of the lorry stopped nearby and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. Police said the victim’s next of kin are yet to be informed.

Witness Rosian Hewitt-Newell told the Evening Standard: ‘He was laying in the road for a good five minutes and no one checked to see if he was breathing.

‘Out of respect for him and his family no-one took any photographs. My prayers are with his family and friends, it was not nice looking at him.’

The incident happened just yards from another major collision yesterday morning, which saw a man injured after being struck by a car in a suspected hit and run.

A Scotland Yard spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Police are investigating after a fatal Collison in Catford.

‘Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a collision involving a lorry and cyclist on Ravensbourne Park, close to Catford railway station.

‘Officers and LAS attended. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin are yet to be informed. The driver of the lorry stopped nearby. 

‘He was subsequently arrested for causing death by careless driving. A number of road closures are currently in place while emergency services deal. 

A London Ambulance Service spokesman told MailOnline: ‘We were called at 6.36am today to reports of a cyclist hit by a vehicle on Ravensbourne Park, Catford.

‘We dispatched an ambulance crew, a medic in a car and an incident response officer to the scene. With the first of our medics arriving in under four minutes. 

‘Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, a man died at the scene.’

Catford station is on the Catford Loop Line between Crofton Park and Bellingham and is mostly served by Thameslink trains between North London and Kent.

A Transport for London spokesman tweeted: ‘Due to the collision in Catford and emergency gas works taking place in the Lewisham area traffic is very slow.’
