Cyclist ‘suffers concussion and may have broken his collarbone’ after a violent crash saw him smash into the barriers at high speed and go flying -with four riders colliding in sprint race in Turkey

- Jasper Philipsen was sandwiched between Edward Planckaert and another rider
- He had no room and pushed Planckaert heavily into the fencing to the left
- It caused a pile-up behind them and Planckaert was taken to hospital
There was a huge pile-up in the Tour of Turkey after a rider was pushed into the side fencing causing mayhem behind them.
The high-speed accident in the fifth stage of the event took place when four riders got too close together as they chased down the leading pack.
Belgian rider Edward Planckaert dropped back into the left-hand side of the group who were then riding shoulder-to shoulder.

It led to Jasper Philipsen pushing team-mate Edward Planckaert into the barriers
Jasper Philipsen was sandwiched between his team-mate and the rider to the right-hand side of him, causing Planckaert to smash heavily into the fencing and land hard on the ground.
Planckaert’s crash caused a chain reaction behind him led by his team-mate Jakub Mareczko who had no time to avoid piling into the Belgian.
While some cyclists were able to avoid the crash, a massive group were left stranded on the road which had been blocked by those that had been involved.

Planckaert’s Alpecin-Fenix Cycling Team confirmed in a tweet that he was taken to hospital after the race.
They wrote: ‘@edwPlanckaert was taken to hospital after crashing into the barriers at high speed, at 800m of the finish line.
‘He has a concussion, pain in the neck, foot and collarbones. X-rays will determine if he also sustained a collarbone fracture.
‘Also @jakubmareczko hit the deck, but he made it home under his own power, albeit with several abrasions.’
Philipsen, who carried on and finished second, also gave his reaction to the crash on Twitter.

He wrote: ‘Feel upset to see Edward Planckaert crash like that after he did a great job.
‘I was following my lead out Lionel Taminaux while trying to make some space for Planckaert on the left.
‘But got pushed on the right and had nowhere to go. Just hope he and the others that crashed are ‘ok’ and recover well.’
The stage victory went to Sam Welsford of Team DSM, while Philipsen recovered to finish second with Arvid de Kleijn rounding out the top-three.
