A dad has been labelled ‘horrible’ and ‘selfish’ after he banned his nine-year-old daughter from attending his wedding because his fiancée wanted a child-free event.

The man, 46, said he’s getting married to his fiancée, 39, in a ‘very lavish and expensive’ adults-only wedding after being together for three years.

He has two daughters – a nine-year-old whose mother left when she was six – and a 19-year-old who’s invited to the wedding and she ‘gets along well’ with his fiancée.

‘My fiancée is a very sophisticated person and have exquisite tastes. She also does not really care for young children and this has created tension between her and my youngest daughter,’ the dad wrote in a Reddit thread.

‘Due to the nature of the wedding and my fiancée’s preferences, our wedding is going to be child free. We will, however, be inviting my oldest as she is no longer a child and because, unlike my youngest, her and my fiancée get along well.’

Should the nine-year-old daughter be allowed to attend the adults-only wedding?

When his bride-to-be and his 19-year-old decided to go dress shopping, his nine-year-old tried to tag along, assuming she was going to the wedding.

‘My fiancée and oldest were going shopping for a dress for my oldest so she thought she was going to need a dress too,’ he said.

‘I explained to her the wedding was going to be for adults only and that she wouldn’t be attending. She started crying and getting mad which stressed out my fiancée. She has been distraught about this for days and hasn’t let it go.’

When his parents came to visit, his youngest daughter told them she was not allowed to see her dad get married.

‘They asked for clarification on the situation so I explained to them that my daughter wouldn’t be attending the wedding because the child-free rule applied to her as well,’ he said.

‘Besides, this wedding would not be suitable for a child and I don’t want my fiancée to have to deal with my daughter on the most important day of her life.

‘My parents told me I was being a terrible father by prioritising my fiancée over my daughter and that on the day of the wedding they would take my daughter out for a special day, which means they wouldn’t be in the wedding.

‘I told them they couldn’t do that, even if they didn’t attend the wedding I wouldn’t let them take my daughter. This has become a bigger conflict than I intended.’

The dad said he and his fiancée are adamant they have done nothing wrong, and they are ‘in the right for wanting a child-free wedding’.

‘But it appears I may lose my parents from the wedding over this and I want to know if I’m in the right or not?’ he added.

After sharing his dilemma, many were furious at the couple for making a ‘selfish’ decision, with many labelling him an ‘absolutely horrible father’.

‘Two people at the tail end of their thirties and early forties making such a selfish and immature ordeal of something like a wedding deserve to have their “big day” end up as a catastrophe,’ one wrote.

Another said: ‘I understand that you want to have a child-free wedding but realistically that isn’t a positive start to your life as a family. At the end of the day, you both were selfish going out of your way to do everything to not include her.’

While another added: ‘Your daughter should always come first. I understand wanting a child-free wedding but she should be the exception.

‘You’re a horrible father and if I were your parents I wouldn’t go to your wedding either. Disgusting behaviour from you and your fiancee. You should seriously be ashamed of yourself.’

Meanwhile, others questioned whether the story was real, with one saying: ‘I want to believe this is fake, but my own biological father did something very similar when I was the same age – also with a so-called elegant woman with refined tastes, nonetheless so I’m not calling immediate b**s*** on it.’
