Dad recounts when son was attacked by shark in California

A father is speaking out after his son was badly injured in a shark attack off the coast of Central California.

Armen Azatian and his 25-year-old son, Grigor, were spearfishing several hundred yards offshore Friday at Pebble Beach when the son was bitten in the right thigh.

The father says Grigor grabbed his spear gun and dove 40 feet when what is believed to be a great white shark came toward him ‘from nowhere’.

The shark ‘didn’t let him go in the beginning,’ Artem told KTLA.

‘He was screaming…I heard his screams. When I heard his scream, I realized it was must be something super big to make him scream that badly.’

Grigor managed to swim back to the boat and Armen drove them to a pier near the Pebble Beach Golf Course.

Two off-duty Monterey County sheriff’s deputies who had been fishing out on the water came to Grigor’s aid

One of the deputies was able to stop the ‘massive blood loss’ because he was adequately trained in emergency field medicine.

At the trauma center, it was determined that the shark had bitten Grigor’s right thigh, causing massive damage to his muscle. He also suffered minor injuries to his left arm and had bite marks on his gloves.

However, no major arteries were severed.

Since Friday, he has undergone two surgeries, with a third scheduled for Tuesday.

‘So far he’s recovering well,’ Armen said.

It won’t be determined until after the third surgery if Grigor will have any long-term damage from his wounds. But if the operation is successful, he will going home this week

Armen is thankful Grigor survived, saying he’s ‘so lucky my son is alive’.

'He was screaming...I heard his screams. When I heard his scream, I realized it was must be something super big to make him scream that badly,' Armen (pictured) told KTLA

Police in a helicopter also spotted a ‘large aquatic animal off Pescadero Point, which may have been a shark,’ according to the Mercury News.

The beach was tagged with warning signs.

State fire captain Josh Silveira says there haven’t been any recent shark sightings at the Monterey County beach.

However, in March a great white shark attacked a kayak in Monterey Bay, knocking the kayaker into the water. He wasn’t bitten.
