Danish royals celebrate Prince Nikolai’s 18th birthday

Most 18-year-olds celebrate with a debut pint with friends in the pub, but Prince Nikolai of Denmark’s coming of age was naturally a more glamorous affair.

The eldest son of Prince Joachim marked the occasion with a dinner party aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog, hosted by his grandmother Queen Margrethe, 77.

He was joined by glamorous Princess Mary who was her usual stylish self in a cream pleated dress with metallic embellishments.

The mother-of-four looked radiant as she boarded the yacht accompanied by her four children Christian, 11, Isabella, 10, and twins Josephine and Vincent, six.

He was also joined by his father and stepmother Princess Marie and mother Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

Queen Margrethe cut a colourful figure in a long red skirt and patterned top, teamed with a black statement necklace.

The monarch looked in excellent spirits and shared a tender moment with her husband Prince Henrik, 80, who placed an arm around his wife’s shoulder as they waved to wellwishers from the deck.

His display of affection comes after tensions were revealed last month when he announced that he would not be buried alongside the Queen as he’s unhappy that he was never given the title of King.

Since his retirement last year, he’s renounced his Prince Consort title and spends much of his time at his vineyard in France.

There was also no sign of tension between the present and former wife of Prince Joachim who were seen greeting each other warmly before posing for a family photo.

Joachim, now 47, and Alexandra, now 52, announced they were divorcing after 10 years together in 2004 when their son Prince Nikolai was five and Prince Felix was two – Denmark’s first royal split in nearly 160 years.

He has since remarried Marie Cavallier, now Princess Marie and the couple have two children together Prince Henrik, six, and Princess Athena, five.

Alexandra, who lost her title of Princess after the divorce also remarried Martin Jørgensen, but that union also ended last year.
