Chelsea footballer Danny Drinkwater has been banned from the roads for 20 months after pleading guilty to drink-driving today following a crash near his home last month.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who has three England caps, was arrested shortly after 12.30am on April 8 after a collision between his Range Rover and a Skoda in Cheshire.

The court heard he was two and a half times the legal limit when his £125,000 Range Rover went through a wall in Mere, Cheshire.

Drinkwater, who earns around £100,000-a-week, was slapped with the band at Stockport Magistrates’ Court this morning along with 70 hours of community service.

It was reported at the time that Drinkwater crashed the vehicle after a ‘chav-themed’ charity party.

Drinkwater, who had two women passengers in the car, caused £50,000 damage to his car and suffered a graze to his forehead.

He gave a reading of 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, with the legal limit being 35 microgrammes.

The crash left debris scattered across a country road while a fence was also flattened.

Drinkwater, of Nether Alderley, Cheshire, and solicitor Beth Mantel, who he is said to have been travelling with at the time, were both treated for minor injuries along with Emma Brown, 30, who was driving the Skoda.

He and Mantel had attended a charity event in an upmarket bar called Victors in Hale, Greater Manchester, approximately six miles away from Drinkwater’s home

Drinkwater signed for Chelsea from league-winning Leicester City in 2017 for £35million but has failed to make his mark in the London side.

He has not featured under Italian manager Maurizio Sarri or played a competitive game for 13 months.

The midfielder, who won the Premier League with Leicester in 2016, has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian manager.

He is expected to leave Chelsea this summer, but the club’s impending transfer ban and concerns over their dwindling home grown quota may have an impact on his future at the end of the season.

He started his football career as a trainee with Manchester United and has also played for Watford, Huddersfield, Cardiff and Barnsley.
