A bold cyclist has been lucky to ride away with their life after they almost hit an oncoming car while trying to do a U-turn.

‘We saw this today and lucky for some quick reactions this cyclist is still alive. Stay safe – things can happen just like that!’ they wrote with the video.

It shows the cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, slowly peddle straight into on-coming traffic.

Initially the cyclist rides straight into the middle of the road where the speed limit is set at 80km/h.

The rider then spins the bike around and start peddling down the middle of the highway.

As the cyclist is peddling down the road an oncoming van is forced to dramatically swerve out of the way to avoid a possible fatal collision.

The cyclist continues ridding down the road at a slow pace as if nothing happened while the cars behind slow to avoid crashing into them.

Darwin Cycling Club coach Tony Marker told NT News  that these types of incidents give the whole cycling community a bad name.

‘It just takes one or two idiots like that to taint the whole cycling community,’ he said.

‘There are a lot of people out there doing the right thing.’
