Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa action-comedy lands at MGM after heated bidding war

Less than two months after Dave Bautista tweeted a movie idea he had to star alongside Jason Momoa, the project has become a reality.

MGM has emerged victorious over a reported four bidders for the untitled project, with Jonathan Tropper, who writes and produces the Apple TV Plus show See that both Momoa, 42, and Bautista, 52, star in, set to write the script, via Deadline.

The deal for the project is expected to close by Friday morning, with the studio set to develop the idea further, though no director is attached.

The project’s inception came about on August 19, when Bautista had a movie idea and sent it out in a tweet.

‘Just going to throw this out into the atmosphere and see what happens. Here we go… Me and Momoa in a Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie directed by David Leitch. Ok! There it is. Now we wait,’ Bautista tweeted.

The tweet got over 11K likes and 1K retweets, and a few days later, Momoa appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden, where he revealed it was happening.

‘I’m not even going to lie to you. I’m not on Twitter, but he literally texted me about four days ago going, “We need to do a buddy cop film,”‘ Momoa told the host.

‘We love each other. We obviously met on See, we’re on Dune together, and so I said, “Absolutely,”‘ he added.

He added that Bautista suggested they make the movie in Hawaii, and Momoa responded, ‘Let’s do it.’

‘So, it’s off to the races now. We’re doing it,’ he added, as Corden joked that this is what happens when you’re Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.

‘It sells itself. Dave loves wearing speedos, I love wearing board shorts and both of us with our shirts off [in a] buddy cop film, he’ll be grumpy and I’ll be charming. Boom.  I’ve got the hair, he doesn’t have hair. We cover all the demographics,’ Momoa added, but when asked about a title, he said, ‘I’ll leave that to other people.’

The report adds that they hope to film this untitled project in 2023, since Momoa is busy filming Aquaman 2 and Bautista is filming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, with a Dune sequel also in the works.
