Dave Hughes slammed over MCG rainbow photo

He’s the beloved radio host and comedian who has never been shy about voicing his love of Australian Rules Football.

But Dave Hughes was rebuked by fans for suggesting the Melbourne Cricket Ground had voted ‘yes’ on the Australian Marriage Law survey.

The comedian took to Instagram on Saturday to repost a photo of the iconic venue that featured a rainbow over the stadium.

Slammed: Dave Hughes was rebuked by fans for suggesting the Melbourne Cricket Ground had voted ‘yes’ on the Australian Marriage Law survey on Grand Final day

‘This morning the MCG votes Yes,’ Dave simply captioned the picturesque post.

However, not everyone agreed with the comedian’s sentiment with one fan telling him to stick to comedy.

‘To be honest give us a spell,’ the fan wrote. ‘I expect better to stick to cracking jokes.’

Too political? The comedian took to Instagram on Saturday to repost a photo of the iconic venue that featured a rainbow that ran from one tip of the stadium to the other. 'This morning the MCG votes Yes,' Dave simply captioned the picturesque post.

The same fan continued the sentiment with: ‘No need for politics on grand final day @dhughesy.

‘Keep that rubbish away from sport,’ another angrily wrote but was contracted with: ‘sport is all inclusive.’

However, not all were as churlish with one follower chiming in with a supportive: ‘No way!! That’s phenomenal, gotta love our city!’

Earlier this month the AFL were forced to remove a temporary ‘Yes’ sign from outside their Melbourne headquarters.

The Aussies Rules league had faced a backlash from some fans for the statement, with some deeming the sign an unnecessary politicization of the sport.

Meanwhile, there’s been a swirl of controversy over the NRL grand final at which US rapper Macklemore is set to perform his song about marriage equality, Same Love, at that code’s grand final on Sunday.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott and right-wing independent MP Bob Katter have slammed the NRL for inviting the rapper to perform at the grand final, saying footy fans should not be subjected to a politicised grand final.

Despite the opposition to Macklemore’s performance, the song, which was released in 2012, this week hit the number one spot on the Australian ARIA singles chart.
