Dead man covered up with bedsheet and a pair of socks is driven past stunned motorists for 38 miles

Two feet under: Dead man covered up with a bedsheet and a pair of socks is driven past stunned motorists for 38 miles because Russian family could not afford undertakers

  • Drivers in city of Voronezh, Russia spotted dead body on top of a Volga sedan
  • Man named as Mikhail Sedykh, 32, had died in his shed in Mozhaiskoe village
  • Family said they could not afford the undertaker transport costs for an autopsy
  • Federal investigators are examining the body to establish the cause of death

Drivers and pedestrians were left stunned when a car carrying a dead man on its roof rack drove into a Russian city.

The macabre scene in the city of Voronezh came after the family of the deceased said they could not afford to pay for undertakers to transport his corpse for an autopsy.

But now federal investigators want to examine the body before it can go six feet under.

Sock and awe: Drivers are stunned at the sight of a dead man’s body lying on the roof rack of a car being driven into the Russian city of Voronezh from a village 38 miles away

The man’s body had mostly been put inside a sack for the journey, but the legs and feet – with his socks still on – were clearly visible to motorists and passersby.

It later emerged the body had been driven for 38 miles like this from a remote village outside the city.

The man, named today as Mikhail Sedykh, 32, had died in a shed at his home in the village of Mozhaiskoe.

Reports say that his body was found by his mother, who was ‘hysterical’ following the discovery.

A friend in the village with a Volga sedan offered to take the corpse to the undertakers and save on the cost of transportation.

‘He did not have a trailer, and he did not want to put the body inside the car or in the boot,’ said another family friend.

‘So it was put on the roof.

‘The mother who lost her son was in hysterics (when she found him), but she did not mind this.’

A spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee which probes unexplained deaths said they were studying the case.

‘The checks are going on into the death of this man,’ said a spokesman.

‘The investigators have visited the scene.

‘Forensic experts have been ordered to examine the body and establish the reason for his death.’
