  • England stopper saw his pre-season disrupted by the effects of long Covid
  • David De Gea has kept hold of the No 1 spot after a strong start to the season
  • Reports suggest Henderson may now seek a loan move in the January window

Dean Henderson reportedly wants a January loan move away from Manchester United after Covid scuppered his chances of taking the gloves from David De Gea.

The 24-year-old hasn’t even made the bench for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far this season with the effects of long Covid ruining his chances of becoming United’s No 1.

Henderson has been restricted to just two appearances in the Under-23s and isn’t even likely to feature against West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

After two successful loan spells at Sheffield United, England international Henderson returned to Old Trafford last season and made 26 appearances.

But he then contracted Covid during the summer and took some time to fully recover and return to training.

In the meantime, De Gea has enjoyed a very good start to the season, including his last-minute penalty save from Mark Noble to seal United’s 2-1 win at West Ham on Sunday.

The Sun report that Henderson will seek another loan during the January window in order to play more regularly.

Henderson, who withdrew from England’s Euro 2020 squad with a hip injury, has only recently been having private training sessions at United’s Carrington base.

He played in United’s 3-1 defeat by Arsenal in the Premier League 2, the under-23 competition, on September 11 and then again in the 2-1 win over Brighton last Saturday.

Tom Heaton, 35, who returned to United in the summer 16 years after leaving the club, is poised to finally make his first-team debut for them against West Ham.

De Gea will be rested ahead of Saturday’s home Premier League fixture with Aston Villa as the Reds looks to continue their good start to the season.
