Debenhams to open doors in Melbourne Australia

One of the world’s oldest and most prized department store giants will soon open on Australian shores.

Debenhams, home to exclusive designer brands, stunning homeware pieces and luxury fashion, will celebrate its grand opening in Melbourne on October 24.

It promises to be far cheaper than Myer and David Jones despite being a third of the size and the new outlet will sell a number of high-end labels never seen before Down Under.

The UK-based department store first opened in 1788 and it has taken nearly 230 years for the chain to follow the first fleet and make waves in Australia.

It now has 243 stores in 28 different countries – but will make finally an Australian debut in the Melbourne CBD.

Debenhams’ new store is located in the basement of St Collins Lane mall on a 3600 sqm lot with an abundance of women and men’s fashion on display.

‘Because it’s a smaller format department store we work really hard on making sure the range is wide enough to be interesting but small enough to fit the space,’ Debenhams’ Christine Proctor told Seven News.

‘We’re hoping people will be pretty excited, I think they are looking for something really different and we’re here to offer that.’

And within 12 months the British department giant is planning to shake-up the fashion world in Sydney too, with several leasing negotiations in place.

Possible locations in Sydney include the outgoing Myer site in Hornsby, Westfield Miranda, Parramatta and Penrith and Warringah Mall on the Northern Beaches.
