Decluttering expert Marie Kondo opens an online shop selling products including a crystal for $75

Decluttering expert Marie Kondo has added an online shop to her site, selling self care and homeware products that ‘spark joy’ for her – but fans have complained about the irony of her message.

The expert, originally from Tokoyo, but now living in Los Angeles, shot to fame worldwide in 2011 with her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, which encourages us to get rid of anything that doesn’t ‘spark joy’.

The shop, Marie admits, is selling 125 products which ‘spark joy’ for her –  including a cement live edge bowl, costing $145 (£112) and a brass tool holder costing $275 (£213).

However, fans criticized the expert, and have taken to Twitter to share their astonishment at the irony of her message – complaining that the guru, who originally preached to us about getting rid of clutter, is now trying to sell us more.

Some of the 125 products have sparked anger with her fans, who have taken to Twitter to claim that ‘you have to respect the scam’

One annoyed fan said: ‘Would you believe it? Marie Kondo, the lady who insisted we get rid of most of our stuff, now has an online shop where we can buy more STUFF!’

While another joked: ‘Marie Kondo has started a shop, where once you’ve cleared out all your existing overpriced, trendy junk, you can replace it with new overpriced, trendy junk… you have to respect the scam!

‘All these years, Marie Kondo wanted us to throw stuff away. And now she wants us to buy stuff – from her new e-commerce shop,’ another fan quipped.

Another criticized her message: ‘Reminder that the #minimalism movement is not inherently anti-consumerism. Marie Kondo launching an online shop and encouraging her audience to declutter to leave space for her products is disappointing.’

While the expert, who also had her own Netflix show last year, also went on to explain: ‘My tidying method isn’t about getting rid of things – it’s about heightening your sensitivity to what brings you joy.

‘Once you’ve completed your tidying, there is room to welcome meaningful objects, people and experiences into your life.’

While another excitedly tweeted: ‘Marie Kondo has her own shop! I’ve got a feeling its going to spark a lot of joy for me’.

Marie, who announced the launch of the online shop on the Wall Street Journal, said that she created the site after friends kept asking where she’d bought things from – which were in her own home. While she also said we shouldn’t be buying things if we already have a similar item that sparks joy.

‘What’s most important to me is that you surround yourself with items that spark joy. If the bowl that you’re using currently sparks joy for you, I don’t encourage replacing it at all,’ she said.
