Decomposing body of USC medical student found

  • Jacob Kelley, 24, had been dead for up to seven days, authorities have revealed
  • The first year medical physiology student was found in his room on Wednesday
  • Students were informed of his death in a letter from the medical school’s dean
  • It is not yet known what caused Kelley’s death, but foul play is not suspected 

A student has been found dead in his university dorm room after a worker smelled his decomposing body.

The 24-year-old, identified as Jacob Kelley, had been dead for up to seven days in his room at USC, according to authorities.

The first year medical physiology student was found on Wednesday afternoon.

In a letter to students, Dr Rohit Varmer, the dean of the medical school, wrote: ‘It was with great sadness that we write to you to inform you of the massing of a member of our Keck School community.’

It continued: ‘Please keep the Kelley family in your thoughts during this difficult time.’ 

LAPD Detective Jose Ramirez has said it is not known how Kelley died, KTLA5 reports.

USC’s Department of Public Safety’s Assistant Chief David Carlisle said the student’s death did not seem to be a ‘criminal thing’.
