With the busiest day of the year for the skies being Saturday December 23, experts suggest arriving at least 90 minutes early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.

‘Every day during the holiday period will be very busy, so no matter what day passengers are travelling, they should plan their journey and leave plenty of time to get to the airport,’ General manager of landside operations and transport at Sydney Airport Craig Norton told the publication.

Road works around Sydney Airport could also contribute to any delays combined with extra traffic flooding the area.

Last year, more than 2.3 million people traveled domestically from the country’s largest airport in December, followed by 2.19 million at Melbourne and 1.5 million at Brisbane.

And it is not just people taking to the skies this Christmas.

About 9000 cats and dogs will be jet setting off across the country, according to the publication.
