This is the bizarre moment Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg greeted a dog by shaking its mouth. 

The former New York mayor was attending a campaign event in Burlington, Vermont on Monday when he met the dog. 

In the clip, he shakes a man’s hand before the excited dog wanders up to him. 

Instead of scratching its ears or petting its head, Bloomberg grabs the dog by the snout before shaking it up and down.

The dog continues wagging its tail and Bloomberg rubs its head before moving away. 

Unsurprisingly, the bizarre clip has been shared widely online, with more than three million people watching it on Twitter. 

And it has divided social media users, with some criticizing the billionaire, while others praised him for playing with the pooch. 

One said: ‘People who don’t know how to handle dogs terrify me.’

Another commented: ‘Billionaires don’t understand dogs.’

While a third joked: ‘Sorry I have a dog and this is not a thing we do.’

Some were more supportive of the presidential candidate, defending him and suggesting that the dog enjoyed the interaction.

Bloomberg spoke to an audience of around 300 in Burlington, though his encounter with the dog proved to be the highlight

One wrote: ‘He must love and know dogs when he felt comfortable putting his hand inside a dog’s mouth and the dog seemed to love it. This is not a thing.’

A second said: ‘Good on Mike. Not a fan of his but good to see him play with the nice doggo.’

Another added: ‘I love that Mike Bloomberg is interacting and being playful with the sweet doggo! Doggo’s tail indicates happiness.’

Visiting rival Bernie Sanders’ own state, Bloomberg spoke to an audience of around 300 in Burlington. 

He called on the Senate to remove President Trump from office before adding that he knew how to ‘beat’ the President in an election.
