Claw and order! Demonstrators ‘throw CRABS at police’ as violent clashes over France’s pension reforms continue

Demonstrators are said to have thrown crabs at police following a week of violent clashes over France’s reforms to the national pension age.

A stand-off over maritime regulations in Rennes saw protesters clutching spider crabs during altercations with the authorities.

It comes as Emmanuel Macron issued a plea for calm in the wake of the nationwide riots.

The French president appeared live on television at lunchtime yesterday to break his silence over raising the country’s retirement age from 62 to 64 without a parliamentary vote.

His actions have provoked a wave of fury across France and six days of violence, which have seen cars torched and running street battles between police and demonstrators.

Mr Macron accused French rioters of acting like Donald Trump supporters who attacked the United States Capitol Building in January 2021. ‘We will not tolerate violence,’ he added.
