Detroit-area girl wounded after grandmother accidentally fires AK-47

A 3-year-old girl has been wounded after an AK-47 assault rifle accidentally discharged as her grandmother was trying to unload the weapon inside a Detroit-area home.

The girl was shot on Wednesday morning after the grandmother found the rifle in the home, Warren police said.

The slug traveled from the second floor and grazed the girl’s leg, who was on the first floor of the home, WJBK-TV reported.

The incident occurred at a home in Warren, which is about 15 miles north of Detroit.

Police say it also narrowly missed an 18-year-old who was in the basement.

Police say the 3-year-old girl was in stable condition at a hospital.

It was not immediately known who owns the AK-47 rifle, but Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said there ‘probably will be some charges forthcoming.’ 

The firearm involved in the injury is a type of assault rifle that was originally manufactured in the Soviet Union. 

It was designed in 1947 by Mikhail Kalashnikov and first used in 1949.
