A Michigan homeowner received a spooky surprise Wednesday when he discovered a mummified human torso in the basement of his home.

Detroit Police said the unnamed property owner, who lives in the 16000 block of Tracey Street on the city’s west side, was renovating his house Wednesday afternoon when he found the decomposed corpse near a bar area in the basement.

The dead body was missing a head, arms and legs. The corpse’s gender has not been confirmed.

The homeowner called police around 1.17pm on Wednesday. The body was sent to Wayne County coroner’s office for examination.

Cmdr. Brian Mounsey told the Associated Press the homeowner bought the property two years ago as an investment, adding that no one has lived there since.

Police believe the body has been in the house since before it was bought.

The coroner’s office did not immediately return calls requesting comment on Thursday. Detroit police said the incident is still under investigation.
