New presidential candidate Deval Patrick cancels campaign speech at Georgia HBCU after just TWO people show up

  • Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick cancelled an event at Morehouse College Wednesday when only two people showed up
  • A CNN reporter took a photograph of an empty room with the only attendees asked by organizers to come to the speech as they passed by
  • ‘The campaign is telling us that they had to catch a flight,’ an organizer told Boston.com
  • Patrick launched a longshot presidential bid last week, after waiting in the sidelines for a year
  • He’s already visited New Hampshire, California, Nevada, Iowa, South Carolina and Georgia in the course of a week

Instead of talking to a crowd of just two, new presidential candidate Deval Patrick cancelled an event at a historically black college in Atlanta Wednesday night.

CNN reported that Patrick, the former Massachusetts governor, was due to appear at Morehouse College for an event organized on short notice by the campus’ New Deal Democrats, but ‘cancelled the event when he arrived and learned he would not have an audience.’

‘The campaign is telling us that they had to catch a flight,’ Julian Hemmings, the president and founder of New Deal Democrats told Boston.com.

Up until five minutes before the event was to kick off nobody was in the audience, CNN observed.

Then two female students arrived who told the network that organizers had asked that they attend as they were walking by.

The situation was reminiscent of the small crowd gathered to hear New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during his short-lived quixotic presidential campaign. De Blasio, along with nine other Democrats, have already dropped out of the race.

Patrick was in Atlanta at the same time the top 10 Democrats running for president were gathered across town at the Tyler Perry Studios for the fifth Democratic debate. There are 18 Democrats currently running.

The ex-governor entered the race too late to meet the requirements to participate in the debate.

Patrick is the most recent entry into the crowded Democratic field, announcing his intentions to seek the White House on Thursday.

He was reportedly an early favorite of President Obama, but a year ago said he wasn’t planning to run.

Sensing a weak field, with no clear frontrunner, Patrick threw his hat into the ring last week, before the New Hampshire primary’s filing deadline.

Patrick called his longshot bid a ‘Hail Mary from two stadiums over.’

But he’s managed to quickly get a campaign operation off the ground.

In a week’s time he’s appeared in New Hampshire, California, Nevada, Iowa, South Carolina – and tried for Georgia.

At Saturday’s California event in Long Beach in front of a progressive crowd, Politico called it a win that he didn’t get booed.

Though, as one Democratic strategist said, ‘He doesn’t have enough name I.D. to get booed.’

That particular crowd is known to get rowdy.

Patrick’s entry came days after former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg confirmed that he was also thinking about jumping in. Bloomberg had also previously said he wouldn’t run.
