Sam Dastyari fought back tears on Tuesday night’s episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, confessing he’s ‘lost everything’. 

The disgraced senator, 35, was seen talking with several of his Channel 10 co-stars about his life following his involvement in the ‘Chinese influence scandal’.

‘Let me explain to you my last year. I was in such a bad way’ he began, adding that he was an ‘unequivocal trainwreck’.

‘I look back now and I was an arrogant pr**k,’ the former politician added candidly. 

On Tuesday it was revealed the disgraced former Labor Senator had split from his wife of eight years, Helen Barron. 

And the father-of-two told his camp-mates on Tuesday: ‘I had one thing in my life and it was everything. Everything was my politics.’ 

He added in a piece to camera: ‘My marriage is over, my reputation is shattered. I have to accept that all of that is completely self-inflicted.

The father-of-two told his camp-mates on Tuesday: 'I had one thing in my life and it was everything. Everything was my politics'

‘I lost everything. I lost a lot…’ he added, appearing to fight back tears.   

Sam split with partner Helen Barron and began dating Labor staffer and former media assistant to ex-Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Claire Johnston.

Less than 12 months earlier, he resigned from office after a travel scandal involving a billionaire Chinese property developer and political donor.

Sam broke the news from the South African jungle where he and the other contestants will spend up to a month competing on the show.

‘The scandal took everything from me – my career and my family,’ he told The Daily Telegraph.

‘Helen stood by me during my dark period … the days I wouldn’t leave my room when I was at rock bottom. It takes a toll on a marriage.  

‘Having cameras parked out the front of your house. Being followed down the streets. Not being able to read the papers because of fear of what is in them. It takes its toll.

‘I changed. I broke. I know I wasn’t able to make her happy and she had a right to move on with her life. 

‘She should only ever have had to sacrifice so much. This year we did Christmas apart, sharing the kids. It hurt. It’s still raw. But Helen deserves better. She always did,’ he added. 

The former couple, who were married in 2010 and shared two daughters, described the marriage split as ‘very amicable’.
