Distressed baby seal dies after rescued by RNLI

  • The animal was spotted by a swimmer near the south coast at 8.15am yesterday
  • Rescue crews immediately rushed to its aid in a bid to keep the animal alive 
  • But the seal has now died, a spokesman for the Maritime Coastguard confirmed 

An injured baby seal that was rescued off Brighton beach by RNLI crews has died.

The animal was spotted by a swimmer near the south coast at around 8.15am yesterday and rescue crews immediately sprang into action to try to save it.

It was reportedly injured and in distressed, and a spokesman for the coastguard has now revealed the fight to keep it alive had been unsuccessful.

Members of the public who had seen the dramatic rescue mission praised the teams involved as ‘wonderful’.

A spokesman for The Maritime Coastguard said: ‘The UK Coastguard received a 999 call at approximately 8.15am this morning to reports of an injured seal in the water near Brighton Pier; a swimmer stayed in the water nearby.’

‘The Shoreham Coastguard Rescue Team and Brighton inshore RNLI lifeboat were tasked to assist British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).’
