A spearfishing has relived his terrifying encounter with a shark that tried to steal his catch.

The fisherman was diving 30 nautical miles off the coast of Geraldton in Western Australia when he captured the encounter on a GoPro attached to the speargun he was using to hunt for crayfish.

‘I decided to stupidly shoot a fish and a massive shark came up and started going berserk,’ the diver told 7NEWS.

The footage shows how the shark quickly approached and bit on to one of the diver’s flippers.

‘It sort of bit down on one of my fins and I started to panic a bit, because I’ve never had that happen to me before,’ he said.

The GoPro footage then flips up to the surface as the diver tried to get away from the frenzied shark, before the animal circled around him.

The fisherman tried to retreat to his boat, but the shark followed him and grabbed on to the fish on his spear.

‘It was super hectic, the first time I’ve been buzzed by a shark. It wasn’t very fun at all,’ he said.

The shark eventually beached itself before returning to the ocean and swimming away into deeper waters.
