DIY flatpack tiny homes cost $15,000 and can be built in two days

In recent years living in a tiny home has become the trendy and affordable way to get a leg up on the property ladder.

And while the homes themselves can range in price, there’s a way to beat the cost, especially if you’re a bit handy.

A Gold Coast-based company has created a range of specially designed DIY flatpack tiny homes, with a 10 square-metre abode costing a total of $15,000.

The miniature homes by Tiny Blox can be built in just two days – and in the tradition of flatpack-style furniture it can be built using just one tool: an electric screw driver.

How these flatpack homes fit together

The footings, floor system, frames, cladding, roof and doors are all screwed together with an electric screw driver.

The homes, which come in four different shapes and sizes, are sold as easy-to-assemble shells but are designed to contain a bedroom, a kitchen and bathroom.

The most standard order comes with Colorbond shell, prefabricated steel frames, glass sliding doors, light fittings, insulation, floorboards and cladding.

The concept allows buyers to choose colours and select add-on features such as air conditioning, a shower, toilet or hot water system.

Or they can leave this as a shell if they wish to use it for other purposes.

Speaking to the Gold Coast Bulletin, owner of Tiny Blox Chris Henry the kit homes are an ideal solution to Australia’s housing crisis.

‘People can’t afford housing in this current climate and instead of just succumbing to a life of debt, they’re looking for smarter options,’ he told the publication.

‘Now with what we’re doing, people can buy a tiny block of land for 20 grand, a tiny home for 15 (thousand) and allow $5000 for everything else and you’ve got a home forever for $40,000.

‘It’s a compressed house,’ Mr Henry added, ‘we’re taking away the fluff.’

Another feature of the homes is that those wishing to expand can do so easily as multiple homes can be bought and joined together.

Depending on where you are choosing to build your tiny home, council approval may not be necessary, however, this is dependent on meeting certain criteria.

‘Many clients choose to build them on skids, making them genuinely removable homes,’ Mr Henry said on Channel 9 News Queensland.

‘The tiny homes movement is gaining interest not just for its novelty, but for the allure of reduced costs, environmental impact, and a simpler lifestyle.’
