DJ who posted viral rant at police officer says its real

A man who went viral after he shared a video of himself berating a police officer has spoken out after people questioned the validity of the footage.

Randell Minott, a New Jersey-based DJ, said that he filmed the rant on September 6 in Kansas City, Missouri, while the partner of the police officer seen in the video was writing him a citation for not using a turn signal.

The DJ, who performs under the name Jimmy Spliff, said that minutes earlier he had watched the same police cruiser pull a man over at a gas station and had a brief stare down with the officers.

When he was stopped minutes later, an officer took out his gun as Minott gathered his documents and ID for police to look at, the DJ said.

When the officer realized he was only pulling out paperwork, he returned the gun to his holster and Minott started filming.

He said he was pulled over in Kansas City, Missouri, after watching the same police cruiser pull a man over at a gas station and had a brief staredown with the officers

Randell Minott, a New Jersey-based DJ who performs under the name Jimmy Spliff, said that he filmed rant on September 6 while the police officer’s partner was writing him a citation for missing a turn signal

‘What if I had seen the gun and gotten nervous? I would have jumped, that would in turn make him nervous, and he would have shot me. And it would have all been a mistake, but I’m sorry, that’s just not a mistake I can accept,’ Minott told The Wrap.

The officer’s partner issued Minott with a turn signal violation, and while he wrote the citation, Minnott pulled out his phone and started filming.

He said he waited to start filming because he wanted to make sure he was safe and that the officer’s phone was re-holstered.

‘Turn signal not made is a big enough of a crime for you to feel like you need to take out your service pistol,’ the man says on the video, which has since gone viral on Facebook and Instagram. ‘Right? Right? Right? That’s what’s up.’

Minott shared the video with the caption: ‘I could of been a statistic if this a****** made a mistake and shot me…’

Minott identified the officer who issued the citation as Jacob Alexander of Kansas City’s metro division. It’s unclear if Alexander is the officer seen in the video.

He said he first encountered the officers minutes before they pulled him over, when they were stopping someone at a gas station.

Minott, who was in Kansas City on a work trip, said everyone at the gas station was watching the situation.

‘When I drove out of the gas station, that same cop that you see in the video, he stared me down before pulling out of the gas station, and I stared back, not to stare at him, but to stare at the situation…’ he told The Wrap. ‘I was just interested in what was going on, like most people, you see police lights, you look.’

It is unclear where Minott filmed the video, but it is believed he is based in East Orange, New Jersey

Five to ten minutes later, he was pulled over, the traffic violation was issued and he filmed his rant.

He said he pulled over immediately and was ‘p***** off’ when the officer pulled a gun on him as he pulled out his documents.

‘When people say, oh, I went overboard [in the video], they don’t understand what was going through my mind at that time,’ Minott told The Wrap. ‘The more and more I started talking to him, I started realizing this guy could have made a mistake and killed me over a f****** turn signal.’

Minott said he didn’t want to turn it into a ‘race issue’, but he wanted officers to know they should be more careful.

Days after sharing his original video, Minott posted a longer version of the video making reference to Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who said he was racially profiled by police in Las Vegas in August.

His longer caption read: ‘MICHEAL BENNET a rich football player and they threw his as** on the floor and pushed a gun in his head for nothing and still you lost souls still jump on every video defending these dudes.

‘If you have a problem with the way I talk to a cop who ILLEGALLY POINTED A GUN AT MY HEAD then LEAVE THIS COUNTRY (see what I did there #LOL) Because last I check its in my constitutional rights #GoAmerikkka

‘If he made a mistake and killed me him and his partner would of made up any kind of lie to get him off…even if they had to make me seem like I was up to something.

Two weeks ago, Michael Bennett was detained on a Las Vegas street for about ten minutes by police who were investigating the firing of gunshots in the area. He's pictured above sitting on the bench during the national anthem prior to the game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday

‘The day a POLICE OFFICER snitches on his fellow BAD OFFICER and GET REWARDED FOR IT instead of bashed I will start trusting police… until then you know the drill!!!’

Two weeks ago, Bennett was detained on a Las Vegas street for about ten minutes by police who were investigating the firing of gunshots in the area.

Bennett has alleged that he had been the victim of racial discrimination after being threatened at gunpoint by the police.

He said they ‘singled’ him out for ‘nothing more than being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time’.

In the longer video of Minott’s reaction to the police officer, he can be seen yelling at the cop for several minutes.

‘Good cops get f***** up because of people like you,’ he says. ‘You came to the car with your gun out. For what? Do you have no conscious? Do you not see what’s going on on TV? But you don’t give a f***, because I’ll just be another dead black motherf*****, right?’

He acknowledges the officer had picked a ‘dangerous job’, but says his respect for him had ‘out of the f****** window’.

Minott mentions that he’s a father of three and if he was shot by a police officer, his children would be left without a father figure.

The officer can be heard occasionally saying ‘OK’ as Minott continues to speak.

The officer in the video is not wearing defining badges that would help determine where he is an officer or what his name is. Instead, he wears a bulletproof vest reading ‘Police’ across the chest.

MailOnline has reached out to Minott through Facebook but has not received a response.
