American rap legend DMC bizarrely claimed he is set to run for President before Lionel Messi’s MLS debut at the Red Bull Arena.
Messi was named on the bench for Inter Miami’s game against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, despite some fans forking out over $20,000 on tickets in anticipation of his league debut.
Yet after coming off the bench on the hour mark, the Barcelona legend ensured those big-spending supporters got their money’s worth when he scored the second goal in a 2-0 Miami win late on.
Prior to kick off, Messi’s demotion did little to dampen the spirits of DMC, who was in attendance at Red Bull Arena on the night.
DMC, real name Darryl McDaniels, told Apple TV that he is planning to run for Presidency after providing a motivational speech about the ‘beauty’ of life.

He first joked: ‘It’s gonna get a little Messi in here!’
McDaniels then continued: ‘The whole beauty of everything that’s going on, Messi being here, soccer, MLS, everything that’s going on, this is what the world is all about.
‘We see so much division, but if we go to a soccer game or concert or museum, where the sports and art is, it’s a true representation of how great this world is. Not can be, is.
‘And I am running for President starting today, because in a beautiful place like this… what better place to announce it?
‘But it’s all about togetherness and people coming together.’
McDaniels is widely considered one of the pioneers of the hip hop scene after founding the legendary New York group Run-DMC.
The Harlem artist has also found success in other fields over the years, having released his own collection of comic books while claiming awards for his charity work.
Messi was not involved from the start of Saturday’s game at Red Bull Arena after being named as a substitute.
Inter boss Tata Martino hinted on Friday that his star man could be afforded a rest this weekend after starting eight games in the space of six weeks since arriving at the club.
Messi mania has well and truly hit the States this summer, with fans spending over $20,000 on tickets for his MLS debut against the Red Bulls
But Inter boss Tata Martino (right) has decided to give his star man a much-needed rest
Speaking after their midweek win over Cincinnati in the US Open Cup semifinal, Martino said: ‘Leo and many other players are reaching an important physical limit and from today we will start to evaluate this – how do I face at least the next three games.
‘You also have to take into account the large number of games that we played in 45, 50 days.’
However, after being introduced on the hour mark Messi eventually made his mark on proceedings with just a few minutes of stoppage time remaining.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner combined brilliantly with Benjamin Cremaschi before tapping home to seal the three points for Inter.
