Celebrity Physician Ginni Mansberg has revealed the importance of looking after the sensitive skin around the eyes in order to maintain a youthful appearance.

The Embarrassing Bodies Down Under GP swears by micro-needing for keeping the signs of aging at bay and has released dissolvable eye patches to help.

And the patches appear to have been an instant success with incredible before and after photos causing a frenzy among beauty lovers.

Om launch day the doctor’s skincare brand, ESK, reported a patch being sold every minute to men and women keen to reverse the signs of aging.

Speaking with FEMAIL Dr Ginni, who has been a GP for over 30 years, said the firsts signs of aging tend to develop around the eyes – making it an important area to focus on during your skincare regime.

She said combatting crows feet, puffy eyes and dark circles can make you look years younger.

For Crows Feet

‘The gold standard to nix crow’s feet is still Botulinum toxin (botox) injections, which work by blocking the nerves that power up the muscles around the eyes,’ she said.

‘The effect can take one or two weeks to fully kick in, and the effect lasts on average  three to four months. Botulinum toxin is more effective against dynamic wrinkles that are seen when your face moves, than static wrinkles, those that are always there.’

She said in-clinic micro needling has proven to be effective for crow’s feet but metal needles around the eyes can be super uncomfortable.

This is what has made the micro-needling patches so popular, according to the doctor, as it is an effective tool people can use at home.

‘New technology has seen dissolving anti-aging microneedle patches be successfully used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. They combine the advantages of micro needling with super high tolerability and the ease of being able to do it at home,’ she said.

For Puffy Eyes

It is important to rule out medical causes for puffy eyes in the first instance, the celebrity GP revealed.

‘Doctors typically test you for thyroid problems, kidney disease or check in on medications that can cause fluid retention,’ she said.

Eye cream with caffeine in it can also help, caffeine not only helps constrict blood vessels meaning less fluid leaking into the under-eye area, but it also stimulates the blood circulation around the which makes the skin around the eye look fresh and rejuvenated.

‘Plus, studies show that caffeine is a powerful antioxidant, helping protect cells against UV radiation and slowing down the effects of photoaging of the skin.

‘If it really gets you down, a cosmetic physician or plastic surgeon can help. There are surgical procedures, including a blepharoplasty (or eyelid lift) and filler into the tear trough deformity.’

For Dark Circles

This isn’t actually an aging problem, the doctor explained, noting it isn’t linked to fatigue either.

‘Here’s what we do know; mostly the discolouration is pigmentation. To a certain extend it is genetic, but it can be made worse by rubbing or scratching the skin around the eyes and by the build-up of fluid due to allergies,’ she said.

But all the same methods of combatting pigmentation still apply to the skin around your eyes.

‘Try a tyrosinase inhibitor to reduce the production of pigment in the skin. Don’t forget 4-n-butylresorcinol is available in your skincare and is at least as (if not more) effective at shutting down melanin production altogether than other tyrosinase inhibitors.

What are Dr Ginni’s top five tips for skincare around the eyes?

1. Dissolving microneedle patches to the skin around the eyes

2. An eye cream with caffeine in it

3. A tyrosinase inhibitor like 4-n-butylresorcinol if you have dark circles

4. All the cosmeceuticals- remember the skin around your eyes

5. Sunscreen – remember the skin around your eyes

‘Use high quality skincare ingredients. All the things that work against ageing skin elsewhere on your face works on the skin around your eyes. We’re talking Retinal, L-Ascorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid and Ceramides. So, when applying your skin care, don’t forget the skin around your eyes.

‘Always protect your eyes from the sun. The skin around your eyes can be super sensitive but make sure you get sunscreen to that skin and go for wrap around sunglasses that will not only prevent wrinkles but will also reduce your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and even skin cancers that just love to pop up on the eyelids,’ she added.

The micro-needling patches were launched last week and appeared to be an instant success.
