Doctor runs A&E department while cuddling a baby

A touching photo of an A&E doctor cuddling a sleeping baby to his chest has gone viral – after it was revealed he ran a hospital department with the newborn on his shoulder.

Dr Muir Wallace was called a ‘legend’ after settling the ‘little guy’ when his sick mother was brought into the emergency room on her own and needed to have tests.

The photo, taken in Waikato Hospital in New Zealand by one of Dr Wallace’s colleagues, clinical nurse specialist Mike Haden-Jones, was posted on Facebook where it’s had more than 3,000 reactions.

The post, titled ‘Sometimes all you need is a hug’, shows Dr Wallace holding the baby on his shoulder while working on two computers in the A&E department.

Apparently, Dr Wallace was the only person able to settle the baby after several other people tried, so he cuddled the newborn for an hour while the mother underwent tests.

The post on the hospital’s Facebook page said: ‘This is a bit different to my usual posts but felt I had to share.

‘The older of the two featured in this picture is Muir – one of our ED consultants. The little guy was here with his mum and badly needed a snooze. Sadly his mum was unwell and needed some tests.

‘I believe several people tried but Muir was the only one able to settle him.

‘So for about an hour the other day our consultant in charge (of the entire ED) was most definitely multi-tasking.

‘Just an example of the small kindnesses that happen everyday that often go unnoticed.’
