Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger and Mercedes-Benz S Class: they’re some of America’s most wanted cars – in more ways than one.

A new study has revealed the top 20 most stolen vehicles in the country, including iconic muscle cars, top of the range SUV’s and souped up sedans.

The Highway Loss Data Institute suggested older cars are far more likely to be stolen than newer cars, which tend to benefit from updated theft prevention systems.

However, they tend to be more lucrative targets so carjackers can focus on them.

Electric cars however are some of the least likely to be stolen, according to the HLDI, an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

‘These are all expensive vehicles, which makes sense,’ said Matt Moore, senior vice president of HLDI, according to USA Today.

‘If you’re going to steal a vehicle – if you’re going to commit a crime – you’re likely going to want to profit from that crime.’

Teslas however, are among the safest cars to own in terms of theft, the report shows – possibly because they are typically charged overnight in closed garages, Moore said.

The four-wheel-drive Tesla Model S and four-wheel-drive Tesla Model X are about 10 times less likely to be stolen than the average vehicle.

‘Even during the day, if you think about where many charging stations are, they’re often close to buildings, in well-lighted places, in some instances protected or at least covered by security cameras,’ Moore said.

‘That probably reduces the likelihood that they’re going to be stolen.’
