Does Apple have another autocorrect bug?

In the latest wave of complaints stemming from Apple’s iOS 11 software, hundreds of users have now found they are unable to correctly type the word ‘it’ – instead, their devices automatically change the spelling to ‘I.T’.

While reports of the bug first began to circulate at the beginning of the month, they were dwarfed by another frustrating autocorrect issue, in which the letter ‘i’ was switched to ‘A [?]’.

But now, the ‘I.T’ problem appears to be catching, with complaints suddenly booming across social media and tech forums.

HOW TO FIX THE BUG

Users have come up with several fixes, including turning off predictive text via settings or downloading a third party keyboard from the App Store.

Apple has since described a workaround for the issue using its text replacement feature.

For a temporary fix before the next iOS update, users can go to the Settings menu, tap General, then Keyboard, and finally tap Text Replacement.

Touch the ‘+’ symbol then type ‘it’ in both Phrase and Shortcut.

As a temporary workaround, Apple has also recommended users reset their keyboard dictionaries.

To do this, go into the Settings app, tap General, then Reset, and ‘Reset Keyboard Dictionary.’

For some users, the issue disappeared with the most recent update – but for others, it appears to have carried over to iOS 11.1.1 and later.

First spotted by MacRumors, complaints of the ‘I.T.’ bug have exploded across numerous platforms.

Some have even found the issue extends to the word ‘is,’ causing it to become ‘I.S.’

The fix, however, hasn’t worked for everyone.

Others have recommended entering the word ‘it’ in the Text Replacement feature, as both a phrase and shortcut.

The issue appears to have emerged suddenly for many iOS users, some who admittedly are not on the latest version.

‘It’s been correcting to ‘IT’ for me,’ one user noted. ‘Just suddenly. I’m still on 11.02. I never updated as I wasn’t having the other auto-correct issue.’

But, many have indicated that the initial ‘A [?]’ bug had been fixed on their devices, suggesting the issue is also appearing in the most recent versions of the operating system.

Earlier this month, Apple issued an emergency fix for a bizarre glitch that caused iPhones to autocorrect the letter ‘i’ to an A with a strange [?] symbol.

The firm released iOS 11.1.1 on Nov 9, promising to resolve ‘an issue with keyboard autocorrect.’

It’s unclear what caused the problem in the first place – but, it led to widespread frustration among iPhone and iPad users, who were forced to use temporary workarounds to type one of the most commonly used letters.

The update also fixed a problem in which Hey Siri would suddenly stop working, according to Apple.
