Does the Federal Budget mean we are headed for an early election?

Joe Hockey’s Federal Budget is less about saving the economy and more about saving Tony Abbott’s job, and could be the first sign Australia is headed to an early election.

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen said the Budget is a clear effort to protect the prime minister.

‘This is a short-term budget to fix a short-term political problem and save one man’s job,’ Mr Bowen said.

Mr Bowen also said the Budget shows deficit has been doubled by the government in one year, and the worst aspects of the 2014 Budget – such as massive cuts to hospitals and schools – are still in place.

‘The fundamental unfairness of last year’s budget disaster remains tonight,’ Mr Bowen said. 

The budget papers included 17 new taxes, breaking a coalition election promise, Mr Bowen said.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon said the Budget suggests the government is considering the possibility of calling an election before the end of the year.
