Dog falls down hole dug by a tortoise while chasing a cat

An unfortunate canine ended up stuck down a five foot hole for hours while chasing a cat.

Rubin the German schnauzer was chasing after the cat when he fell down the ditch, which had been dug by the family’s African tortoise.

It took four separate agencies, the City of Chandler utilities, Arizona Public Service Electric Company and Southwest Gas, from Arizona, around four hours to rescue the pooch who was jammed into the hole, Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV reported.

The cat was able to wriggle free on its own.

Video footage captured the moment Rubin was finally lifted free and gave himself a dignified shake, before running off into the garden.

Toby Passmore, the owner of Rubin and Scully the African spurred tortoise, said he’d tried to free his pet himself, digging with his bare hands out of fear his dog could be suffocating.

‘I’m very thankful to have him back and OK, because like I said, that would have been a hard one to live with to lose him like that,’ Passmore said.

While he says Rubin and Scully, who he’s had for ten years, normally get on well, it can make for some unusual scenarios.

‘They’re awesome animals,’ Passmore added. ‘It’s just if you have a dog that’ll go down into the chamber of death that your tortoise digs, it’s not a good fit.’
