A dog thief has stolen a family’s beloved Siberian husky just hours after they had to euthanise their other pet.

Hayley, from Auckland, New Zealand, said her 14-year-old dog Gizmo was taken from her house on just before midnight on August 7.

In CCTV footage, a man was seen at the front gate with another dog – that police believe was also stolen – and attaching a lead on Gizmo before walking away with both animals.

Hayley told Stuff that Gizmo was stolen after they had to euthanise their other dog that morning and it has left her family ‘distraught.’

The family believed Gizmo had escaped until they saw CCTV footage of the dog thief.

Hayley believes the man who stole Gizmo had been staking out her property as the night he stole their dog was the first night the animal was alone.

She posted about the abduction on social media and other dog owners from the area were concerned about their animals as they did not know who the man was.

Hayley received a message on Facebook telling her that a staff member at a recreational centre took Gizmo from a homeless woman and brought it to a vet surgery.

She has been reunited with Gizmo and a padlock has since been put on the gate so no-one without a key can open it.

Jordan Lang believed the second dog seen in the CCTV footage was his two-year-old German shepherd, Bluey, who went missing in the same area between midnight and 2am on August 6.

Mr Lang found the dog’s cage open and it had appeared to have been tampered with.

He saw the footage of Gizmo being stolen and recognised the other dog.

He said Bluey was very friendly and would go with anyone.

He posted on social media about Bluey’s disappearance but two days later, the dog showed up a his house, wet and without a collar.
