Dolly Parton reveals she used her royalties from to invest in Black Tennessee community

Dolly Parton made quite the surprising revelation about what she did with the royalties from Whitney Houston’s cover of her song I Will Always Love You.

Parton, 75, originally recorded I Will Always Love You in 1974, though Whitney Houston recorded her version for the hit 1992 movie The Bodyguard, which she starred in with Kevin Costner.

Houston’s song would go on to be the best-selling single by a female singer in music history, with Parton earning a reported $10 million, which she revealed on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday that she used to invest in a Black community in Nashville.

During a Q&A section of the show, Parton was asked by a fan what was the ‘best thing you bought or invested in with money from your I Will Always Love You royalties.’

Parton responded, ‘I bought my big office complex in Nashville,’ adding it was the ‘Black area of town’ that was ‘off the beaten path.’  

She said it was the ‘perfect place for me to be,’ adding it was mostly just Black families living there.

‘I thought well I am gonna buy this place, the whole strip mall, and I thought it was the perfect place for me to be, considering it was Whitney,’ she said.

‘It was great. I just thought I’m gonna be down here with her people, who are my people as well and so I just love the fact that I spent that money on a complex and I think this is the House That Whitney Built.’

She was also asked what she wears to run a casual errand, and she revealed she still wears her trademark high heels.

When asked if she has any unconventional hobbies, Parton revealed she enjoys, ‘finding old houses and going in them and seeing if I can find old books or old pieces of glass.’

When asked if she has a cocktail of choice, she said she’s ‘not a big drinker’ but she likes a good martini, ‘because it hits you real hard real quick.’

Andy Cohen mentioned that she’s one of the most positive people around, and when asked how she stays so positive, she revealed you have to work at it.

‘Well, you kind of have to work at being positive like some people work at being miserable. I just think… it’s an attitude so I just try to find all the good things I can,’ she said.

Parton made headlines last week when she released her first fragrance entitled Sent From Above, along with a song of the same name.
