President Donald Trump is meeting with doctors for a physical exam that the White House says is an early part of his annual checkup.

Trump, 73, arrived at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon for the physical exam, which had not been previously announced. 

‘Anticipating a very busy 2020, the President is taking advantage of a free weekend here in Washington, D.C., to begin portions of his routine annual physical exam at Walter Reed,’ White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

The president was seen departing the White House residence shortly after 2pm wearing a long dark overcoat and carrying what looked like a tan rectangle-shaped folder or envelope under his arm. 

He entered a black SUV and the motorcade departed for Walter Reed. Upon arrival, members if the Secret Service’s heavily armed counter-assault team were seen taking up positions at the hospital.

Reporters in the White House pool were forbidden to report on Trump’s departure until he arrived at the military hospital, where presidents and their families traditionally receive medical care and annual checkups. 

Trump’s last physical exam was in February. 

Physician to the President Sean Conley afterward, in a letter to the president’s chief spokeswoman, said that Trump was ‘in very good health’.

Conley wrote in February that he expected Trump to ‘remain so for the duration of his Presidency, and beyond.’
