Double tragedy as man and eight-year-old girl are killed in Hull house fire

A man and an eight-year-old girl have died in a house fire in Hull. 

The fire brigade battled the blaze on Wensley Avenue in Hull around 8am.

They pulled them both from the house, but were unable to save the man who died at the scene.

The eight-year-old girl died later at hospital.

Carl Goodfellow, who lives on the same street, told the Hull Daily Mail how he tried to warn to occupants.

He said he heard shouting and saw smoke pouring from the house.

He said: ‘It’s devastating, you just don’t expect this sort of thing do you.

‘I know him as a neighbour, we sent each other Christmas cards and stuff, but hadn’t been inside each others houses or anything.’ 

In a statement, Humberside Police said: ‘Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fire at a house on Wensley Avenue in Hull.

‘Humberside Fire and Rescue, ambulance and police were called at 7.50am today to reports of a fire at a house.

‘Emergency services worked to extinguish the fire and get the occupants out of the building.

‘Tragically two people have died in the fire. A man was pronounced dead at the scene and an eight year-old girl, who had been taken to hospital, has sadly died.

‘There will be a scene guard in place today as emergency services continue to work together to establish the cause of the fire.’
