Dramatic video shows a massive wall of dust engulfing an entire town and turning it red in minutes amid thunderstorms in Australia

This is the eerie moment an imposing dust cloud billows across the plains of Australia and within minutes swallows up the landscape in a thick red fog.

Locals in Nyngan, New South Wales, watched dumbfounded as the wall of dust loomed in on them.

The freak weather is believed to be caused by winds from nearby thunderstorms and dry conditions.

David Motley, who filmed the dust cloud for the second day running, said he was yesterday forced to ‘save the house’ from the storm.

During a commentary on his video, he said: ‘Here we are again, I know it’s probably boring everybody but it’s our second day in a row.

‘It’s run around us and then come back out to the East which is majorly unusual, it never happens.

Probably in my 15 years one storm’s come back like that. But yesterday we had to bail out… and go and save the house.

‘But today I thought we’d come and get a bit of perspective as it hits us and show you what it’s like.’

He continues to speak, but is drowned out by the wind which thrashes against the camera’s microphone.

Robyn Cashion also took a video and lamented the lack of rainfall in the area, writing: ‘Now in Nyngan NSW. No rain just more bloody dust.’

Georgie Saunders echoed his call for rain and, alongside her own clip, wrote: ‘Dust storm rolling in, hopefully bringing lots of rain.’

Thankfully, Nyngan did receive 11mm of rainfall last night, which should provide some relief to the rural area, which has been gripped in recent months with drought.

Australia has been rocked in the past few months by bushfires which have ravaged an estimated 46million acres and killed at least 29 people.

New South Wales has been one of the hardest hit regions – declaring a temporary state of emergency – and has drawn firefighters from all over the country.

Like the dust cloud in Nyngan, the dryness has been one of the factors blamed for the bushfires.
