Driver fights for life after car is torn APART in crash 

  • A silver sedan was driving down Mallee Highway in Elwomple, in Adelaide
  • It slammed violently into a tree about 5.30am and tore into two pieces 
  • The driver, a man in his 40s, was airlifted to hospital and is in a critical condition 

A man suffered life threatening injuries after the car he was driving collided with a tree and dramatically tore into two pieces Friday morning.

The silver sedan was travelling along Mallee Highway in Elwomple, south east of Adelaide, when the incident occured about 5.30am.

Emergency services arrived to find a man in his 40s trapped inside the ripped apart Ford Falcon, which appeared to be driving towards the city, The Advertiser reports.

The driver was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre, where he remains in a critical condition.

Dramatic footage of the horrific aftermath shows metal debris strewn across the highway, which was closed between Dukes Highway and Old Dukes Highway as Major Crash investigators attended the scene. 

The Vehicle, which had Victorian licence plates, was found facing the opposite direction to the way it was believed to have been travelling.
