Driver gets customer out before taxi explodes into flames

A quick-thinking cab driver managed to get his customer to safety moments before his car burst into flames.

Osmond Jama had been half-way through a trip through Adelaide’s western suburbs when smoke began filling his vehicle.

He asked if he could drop his passenger off and pulled into a car park, where he made a call to the RAA.

A faulty battery sparked a blaze and minutes later, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, 7News reports.

‘Minutes before, I was driving this car, I had a customer with me,’ he told the website.

After letting the passenger out, he inspected the vehicle to see where the smoke was coming from.

‘I realised it was coming from the boot, it was shooting out from the windows and everywhere, it was on fire big time,’ Mr Jama said.

The fire also came close to a nearby Chemist Warehouse store.

The huge blaze was reportedly caused by a faulty battery in the boot of the hybrid car

Mr Jama added that he is simply grateful that he managed to escape in time.

He also said the vehicle belongs to his employer and he is only the driver.

The cause of the fire is thought to be a faulty in a battery that was in the boot of the hybrid vehicle, according to 7News.

The RAA says such faults are not common and usually, a dashboard warning would alert drivers to the issue.
