Driver gets trapped on level crossing in Essex

  • A car is left stranded in the middle of barriers as a pedestrian escapes injury
  • Footage shows a person haul suitcases at speed over a level crossing in Purfleet
  • The car reverses, smashing through the barrier to escape the level crossing

This is the moment a car was trapped on a level crossing and the driver resorted to reversing through a barrier to escape.

The video shows the driver in a frantic bid to vacate the crossing in Purfleet, Essex, as barriers lower on either side of the vehicle.

A pedestrian next to him races across with suitcases, narrowly avoiding the barrier coming down on their head.

The clip, uploaded to YouTube by British Transport Police today, shows the walker race from one side of the crossing to the other as they see the barriers begin to fall.

After racing across with suitcases in tow, the person ducks under the falling beam and just about makes it to the other side.

As the pedestrian strolls off unscathed, the driver panics and reverses backward to smash through one of the beams trapping them.

There were three fatalities on level crossings in Britain from 2015-16 and all were pedestrians.

This was down from 11 fatalities than in 2014-15.
