Driver is shot dead and passenger is arrested after ‘trying to run over a border agent as they tried to re-enter Mexico’

  • The unidentified man was shot dead at the Port of Nogales entry in Arizona
  • At 7pm on Thursday, he was ordered to stop as he attempted to enter Mexico
  • Agents say he refused and instead tried to run over a CBP agent at the scene
  • Shots were fired into his silver pick-up truck and the driver died at the wheel
  • Another man, who was sitting in his passenger seat, was arrested
  • The government has not yet revealed why the pair would not stop

A driver was shot dead and his passenger was arrested as they allegedly tried to run over a Customs and Border Patrol agent while trying to enter Mexico on Thursday night.

The driver, who has not been named, was shot in the head after reportedly trying to mow down the agent in his pick-up truck at 7pm at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Arizona.

It is not clear if he was Mexican, but The Nogales International newspaper reports he was trying to go ‘back’ across the border from the US when he was killed.

The agent reportedly asked him to stop but he refused and kept driving.

Before he could strike the agent, shots were fired and the driver was killed.

Another man who was in the passenger seat of their pick-up truck was arrested at the scene. He did not suffer any injuries.

Once the vehicle eventually came to a stop on the other side of the border, CBP agents moved in on the car and dragged the driver’s body out.

It is not clear why the pair were trying to evade law enforcement or if anything illegal was found inside their truck.

The incident closed traffic at the border stop for up to four hours.

In a tweet, the agency said: ‘CBP is actively investigating an incident at the #PortofNogales DeConcini Crossing.

‘There are temporary disruptions to southbound port operations.

‘The Mariposa Crossing will remain open to assist with traffic exiting the US.

‘More info will be released as it becomes available.’

A spokesman for the agency did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s inquiries on Friday morning.

The driver was dragged from the driver's seat to be taken to the hospital. Their car kept going after he was shot and eventually came to a stop on one of the buffers
