A pedicab driver has four bamboo sticks impaled through his torso after crashed into a truck in Hubei, south-east China on Wednesday night.
The 25-year-old Mr Li was pinned to his driver seat as the poles speared under both armpits and the chest.
Firefighters had to shorten the sticks and carefully lifted him out of the vehicle. Mr Li remains in critical condition despite the doctors had all the objects removed, according to Chinese reports.

The poles slide off a truck and strikes into Mr Li’s chest and out from his back due to the impact
Local police received reports of a traffic accident that a pedicab crashed into a bamboo-loading truck in Yangxin, Huangshi city at 10pm.
The bamboo sticks had fallen out due to the impact and four of them had instantly struck into Mr Li.
Huangshi firefighters examined the situation and decided to shorten the bamboos using handheld cutters.
‘The situation was very tricky. We didn’t want to cause any further harm to the driver,’ assistant chief Yang Quanwei told Beijing News.
Other firefighters tried to keep Mr Li awake while carrying the rescue work.
The driver was sent to Yangxin People’s Hospital and later transferred to the cardiothoracic department for surgery.

Mr Li is treated at the hospital but remains in critical condition after the surgery
Dr Chen Jie and three surgeons managed to remove all four bamboos from Mr Li’s upper body.
Dr Chen spoke to Chutian Metropolitan Daily that Mr Li was lucky that none of the bamboos had damaged the heart and the arteries.
However, Mr Li remains in critical condition after the operation.
Further investigations are underway.
