The Naval Station Great Lakes has apprehended the vehicle and the driver who crashed through a gate on the base on Friday morning. 

In a Friday update shared on Facebook, the station said that the driver was being questioned in custody as ‘military working dogs’ were sweeping the area. 

‘Several buildings have been evacuated,’ the post stated.

The station, located in a North Chicago suburb, had shared an earlier message on their Facebook telling people to ‘hide’ or ‘fight.’ 

‘All personnel lockdown,’ they added in the Friday morning post. ‘Take cover in the nearest building or structure. Await further instruction. All gates are closed. 

The vehicle went in at 7.09am Friday and the base will remain on lockdown until the vehicle is located, Public Affairs spokesman John Sheppard said. He said he could not provide further information.

At 9.53am, the Naval Base shared that the lockdown was still underway but ‘no one was harmed and no property was damaged.’ They called the ‘unathorized entry’ a ‘minor situation.’

The station was scheduled to have a recruit graduation ceremony at 9am that has since been delayed by one hour. It is still scheduled to start at 10am.

A person commenting under the station’s Facebook post shared that she had been waiting for the graduation but could see ‘suspicious care fires at the gates’. 

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post that there is ‘no known threat outside of the base.’

All, please be aware, our gates are closed,’ they said in the post. ‘Lovell FHCC is on lockdown, in coordination with Naval Station Great Lakes. Shelter in place and await further instruction.’  

The hospital later added: ‘Patient care should continue in clinical work places as much as possible, but staff and patients must shelter in place until this is resolved.’
