Drivers are urgently rushed to hospital after their trucks collide before ploughing into a home

A family has miraculously escaped serious injury after two trucks ploughed into their Sydney home and burst into flames on Christmas Eve.

The vehicles were travelling at Schofields on Tuesday when they collided at an intersection at about 10.15pm.  

The trucks slammed into the front of a two-storey house, with one catching fire. 

The next-door neighbours came to the rescue, helping one of the drivers out of their vehicle and extinguishing the fire.

The other driver had to be removed with the help of New South Wales Fire and Rescue.

The two drivers, aged 29 and 30, sustained serious leg fractures and were flown to Westmead Hospital.

The two remain in hospital and the older man will undergo surgery for serious leg fractures and a dislocated hip.

Police say the family inside the home at the time was shaken but otherwise uninjured.

There have been six fatalities and 397 major crashes on New South Wales roads since police began their Christmas road safety campaign on Friday.   

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, is urging drivers to take extra care while travelling this festive season.

‘We want everyone to enjoy Christmas Day and arrive at their destinations safely,’ Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

‘It’s alarming that we are stopping drivers for driving while disqualified, driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and speeding,’ he said.
