Drone footage shows Puerto Rico capital devastated

Drone footage showing the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico was released on Wednesday.

Images from the unmanned aerial vehicle shows the city of San Juan deluged with flood water as residents of the US territory continue to struggle without electricity.

Nearly every street in the city appears submerged as the drone scans the sky in the aftermath of the powerful storm.

At least 15 people were killed in Puerto Rico, El Nuevo Día newspaper reported, though the island’s Governor Ricardo Rossello told CNN he had reports of at least 13 people on the island being killed. 

Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in 80 years.  

Millions of Puerto Ricans are now without power after the Category 4 hurricane ripped through the island – crumbling the electric grid and paralyzing the territory with landslides, flooding and downed trees.

The full of extent of the damage is still unclear as rescue teams have not been able to make communication with major parts of the island which were cut off by the storm. 

Maria moved north after pummeling the island through Wednesday night- but flooding continued through Thursday afternoon, leaving many San Juan streets looking like small rivers. 

Hurricane Maria had sustained winds of 155mph through Wednesday. Mayor of the capital Carmen Yulin Cruz said the devastation is like nothing she has ever seen, telling MSNBC ‘The San Juan that we knew yesterday is no longer there.’ 

Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas is the latest victim of Hurricane Maria as it continues to travels through the Caribbean.
