One hundred and fifty drones lit up the night sky in the Swiss city of Zurich last night as the popular triennual Züri Fäscht festival got underway.

The three-day event is held around Lake Zurich and the Limmat River and this year’s – the first since 2016 – was the first to feature the use of lit up drones to project an enormous 3D image of a bird into the night sky.

The drones complemented the usual array of musical performances, fairground rides, food and drink stands, market stalls, and a fantastic 30-minute fireworks display over the lake.

An estimated two million people have descended on the city to take part in the celebrations and were seen packing out the Quaibrücke bridge, as well as bars, restaurants and the river front, to watch last night’s spectacle.

According to the festival’s organisers, the drones were powered by renewable energy, although the planes which will be used tomorrow and on Monday are not.

The festival was first held in 1951 to mark 600 years since the canton (state) of Zurich joined the Swiss confederation, which is today made up of 26 cantons.

It has been held every three years since 1976 and took the name Züri Fäscht in the 1990s.
