Drought-hit farmer wins $200,000 Lucky Lotteries prize and plans to spend winnings on feeding stock

A farmer battling the drought has won a $200,000 lottery prize and now plans to spend his good fortune feeding his starving livestock.

The cattle grazier from the New South Wales Hunter Valley, one of the state’s worst drought-hit areas, said the lack of rain had dried up his dams and tripled hay prices.

The land owner from Singleton, a two-hour drive north-west of Sydney, said his $200,000 Lucky Lotteries win had come at the perfect time.

‘It’s brilliant. It cheered my day up, as you can imagine,’ he laughed today when contacted by a NSW Lotteries official.

‘We’ve been going through the drought and things are a bit tough at the moment, so the win will be a godsend.

‘It’s a great win. We’ll be using the money for all that and making our life a little less stressful.’

The farmer, who wished to remain anonymous, said the win would be used to feed his livestock.

‘I’ve been buying hay for the animals and things are triple the price, so it will be very good,’ he said.

‘We are going to get a water bore and that can be expensive, so this will go towards things like that.

‘We raise cattle for the markets and it has been tough, as a lot of our dams have been drying up.’

The farmer, who bought his winning ticket at the Singleton Discount Drug Store, won the first prize in Friday’s Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw 1131.

With a consolation prize added in, his total winnings were $201,000.

The win came a month after the NSW Department of Primary Industries declared the entire state was in drought, with 61 per cent of it in drought or an intense drought.
