Officers observed the 23-year-old was holding the bird in his left hand as they approached and the animal looked distressed with its wings outstretched.

They ordered the man to slowly put the bird down, which he did.

Although slightly ruffled, after a moment of confusion the animal flapped its wings and flew to safety.

Police then spoke with the man, whom they say had bloodshot eyes and was struggling to keep his balance.

He admitted he had consumed alcohol throughout the evening – which he had spent watching the Sydney Surf Pro.

The bird did not press charges and the man was issued with a ‘move on’ direction to leave Manly CBD and not return for six hours.

Sydney tourist hotspots are widely known as seagull gathering locations due to the abundance of snack foods and distracted sightseers.
